Product Overview

The ISO6721 is a high-performance dual-channel digital isolator from Texas Instruments’ ISO672x series. Utilising TI’s dual-capacitor silicon dioxide (SiO₂) insulated-gate technology, the logic inputs and output buffers of each isolation channel are isolated by an insulated gate, providing high electromagnetic immunity and low emissions, whilst also offering low power consumption. The ISO6721 features a 2-channel 1/1 configuration (1 forward channel + 1 reverse channel), making it ideal for communication interface designs such as UART, SPI and CAN that require bidirectional signal isolation.

Key Technical Features

High-Speed Data Transmission and Wide Voltage Support

The ISO6721 supports data rates of up to 50 Mbps with a propagation delay of just 11 ns (typical), meeting the stringent timing requirements of applications such as industrial communication and motor control. The device operates within a wide supply voltage range of 1.71 V to 5.5 V and supports level conversion between 1.71 V and 5.5 V, enabling flexible adaptation to signal transmission requirements across different voltage domains.

The ISO6721 utilises TI’s proprietary dual-capacitor silicon dioxide (SiO₂) insulated gate technology, providing isolation ratings of up to 3,000 V rms (D-8 narrow-body package) or 5,000 V rms (DWV-8 wide-body package). Typical common-mode transient immunity (CMTI) reaches ±150 kV/µs, ensuring stable signal transmission even in high-noise environments caused by the rapid switching of power devices.

Ultra-low power consumption and high electromagnetic compatibility

At a data rate of 1 Mbps, the ISO6721 consumes only 1.8 mA per channel (typical), representing a 5- to 10-fold reduction in power consumption compared to traditional optocoupler solutions. The device offers excellent electromagnetic compatibility, with outstanding system-level ESD, EFT and surge immunity, and provides ±8 kV IEC 61000-4-2 contact discharge protection across the entire isolation barrier.

Flexible Default Output Options

The ISO6721 offers two default output options: high level (ISO672xB) and low level (ISO672xFB). In the event of a loss of input power or signal, devices without the ‘F’ suffix default to a high-level output, whilst those with the ‘F’ suffix default to a low-level output, allowing for flexible selection during system design.

Isolated UART Interface

The ISO6721 requires isolation of only two channels to realise a complete isolated UART interface, offering a simple and user-friendly circuit design. Compared to optocoupler solutions, the ISO6721 digital isolator consumes 5 to 10 times less current, requires no additional passive components, and offers a solution size that is approximately half that of an optocoupler circuit.
