Product Overview: More than just 6 axes – a true edge AI engine

The LSM6DSOX is a System-in-Package (SiP) 6-axis Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) that integrates a 3-axis digital accelerometer and a 3-axis digital gyroscope. Its core breakthrough lies in the built-in Machine Learning Core (MLC) and programmable Finite State Machine (FSM) — this enables the sensor to independently perform gesture recognition, activity classification and anomaly detection locally, without needing to wake the main control chip, thereby significantly reducing system power consumption. For drones requiring extended flight times, this ‘always-on’ and low-power characteristic is key to optimising flight endurance.

1. Machine Learning Core (MLC) and Finite State Machine (FSM)

During flight, drones need to distinguish between ‘hover’, ‘manoeuvre’, ‘drop’ or ‘collision’ states. The LSM6DSOX’s built-in MLC can train decision tree models to perform these classifications locally, thereby reducing the computational load on the flight control MCU. The FSM can detect events in real time, such as free fall, 6D/4D directional changes, and single/double clicks (used to trigger photo capture).

 

2. Dedicated OIS/EIS Optical Image Stabilisation Path

For drones equipped with gimbal-mounted cameras, the LSM6DSOX provides a dedicated auxiliary SPI interface and an OIS signal processing path. It can directly output high-frequency gyroscope and accelerometer data to the gimbal motor driver, enabling optical image stabilisation (OIS) and electronic image stabilisation (EIS), thereby significantly reducing image shake.

 

3. Sensor Data Synchronisation (S4S)

Supports data synchronisation with the main processor, ensuring that IMU data is strictly aligned with timestamps from multiple sensors such as GPS, magnetometers and barometers—which is crucial for drone attitude estimation (AHRS) and visual-inertial odometry (VIO).
