Stock is not waste: Mingjiada redefines the procurement of electronic components using a distributor’s approach

There is a harsh reality regarding electronic component stock: its value tends to depreciate faster than the pace of procurement decisions. Industry data shows that electronic component stock held for more than 180 days loses on average over 30 per cent of its market value; if held for more than two years, the recovery price may be as low as 10 to 30 per cent of the original purchase cost. This means that every batch of IC chips left in the warehouse and every unopened box of passive components is ‘evaporating’ in value at a rate invisible to the naked eye.

The procurement business of Shenzhen Mingjiada Electronics Co., Ltd. essentially focuses on one thing: finding an outlet for these ‘evaporating assets’ before their value drops to zero.

Three Types of Stock, Three Different Disposal Strategies

The electronic components that Mingjiada purchases on a long-term basis broadly correspond to three types of asset disposal pressures faced by enterprises, each with its own level of urgency and operational complexity.

The first type is accumulated inventory within factories. Project terminations, BOM changes, production line switches and order cancellations—these are virtually unavoidable in the electronics manufacturing process, and each round of adjustment leaves a batch of ‘unused but undamaged’ original components in the warehouse. These may be unopened reels of MCUs or loose diodes and transistors in tubes; long-term storage not only occupies warehouse space, but moisture and oxidation also accelerate the depreciation of what were originally intact components. Mingjiada employs an A/B/C grading system to assess such materials: Grade A comprises items with intact original factory plastic seals and unopened moisture-proof bags, which are quoted at market rates; Grade B consists of items with minor packaging damage or slight pin oxidation but fully functional, which are purchased at a discounted price; Grade C comprises items with cosmetic defects but which can be repaired or dismantled for reuse, and are acquired at residual value. This grading system enables factories to clearly identify the minimum value threshold for each category of material when disposing of stock.

The second scenario involves the need for bulk liquidation of electronic surplus stock. Factory relocations, production line shutdowns and warehouse clearances often result in the need to dispose of ‘entire warehouse lots’—where component types are mixed and quantities are vast, leaving factories without the resources to sort and quote for each item individually. Mingjiada supports the bulk purchase of entire warehouse consignments and also accepts assessments for small, scattered quantities of leftover stock. Customers need only provide a list of materials (model numbers, quantities, brands and packaging types) to receive a preliminary recycling quotation. For customers in the Pearl River Delta region, we can arrange for staff to visit on-site to inspect packaging condition and batch information, and to carry out an on-site inventory check.

The third category involves the purchase of electronic components confiscated by customs. Electronic components involved in cases and confiscated by customs in accordance with the law enter the market via public auction. The distinctive nature of this type of stock lies in the fact that auction lots typically appear in the form of entire batches or full containers, comprising a mix of product categories; furthermore, the auction notice explicitly states that ‘no guarantee is given regarding the market circulation of the lots’, and the successful bidder must independently complete the necessary procedures for placing the goods into circulation. This means that the purchaser must not only possess the ability to identify components but also have a clear understanding of the auction handover process and subsequent compliance requirements. Mingjiada possesses many years of practical experience in the acquisition of electronic surplus materials confiscated by customs; we are able to rapidly inventory part numbers, verify the condition of components and provide reasonable quotations, whilst ensuring that the transaction process is standardised and fully documented.

What distinguishes a distributor’s approach to recycling in terms of pricing logic?

There is a key difference between Mingjiada’s acquisition business and that of ordinary electronic scrap recyclers: the company itself has long been engaged in the distribution of electronic components, supplying products from leading international brands such as TI, ADI, ST, Infineon, NXP, Microchip, Broadcom and AMD (Xilinx). This means that when evaluating a batch of obsolete stock, Mingjiada’s quotations are based on genuine procurement channels and real-time market supply and demand, rather than vague empirical estimates.

This ‘insider’s perspective’ on pricing is particularly important when acquiring high-value ICs. The value of a surplus automotive-grade MCU in the recycling market can be several times higher than that of a general-purpose logic chip in the same package that has been discontinued. Mingjiada maintains a database of 2 million stock part numbers and distributes products from over 500 manufacturers. It possesses direct market insight into the part number status, distribution channels and price trends of various components, enabling quotations that more closely reflect actual market value.

A Predictable Path to Realisation

For companies holding idle stock, the greatest concern is often not ‘whether it can be sold’, but rather ‘whether the process is transparent and payment is reliable’. Mingjiada’s acquisition process begins with an online preliminary assessment: clients provide a list and photographs of the items to receive a rapid initial valuation; once intent is confirmed, an on-site inspection is arranged or samples are sent for verification; after both parties agree on the price, settlement is made in a single cash payment, with no consignment arrangements or hidden deductions. A non-disclosure agreement may be signed prior to the transaction, and factory and project information is anonymised.

The scope of purchases covers ICs (MCUs, memory chips, automotive-grade chips, power management ICs, FPGAs, etc.), discrete semiconductor devices (MOSFETs, IGBTs, SiC devices, GaN devices, etc.), sensors and modules, as well as factory project offcuts, distributor surplus stock, goods returned to the port, and electronic surplus stock from customs forfeiture auctions.

There is nothing wrong with stock itself; the mistake lies in allowing it to remain in the warehouse indefinitely. In the world of electronic components, time is never on the side of assets.
